Hi,

I`m presently testing Gee Whiz with Netshield. What I read about Netshield, is not scanning the ZIP file for virus. Is it true?

I would like to receive other feedback from users running Gee Whiz + NetShield.

Best Regards,

Hi Eric,

I`m not sure about Netshield not scanning ZIP files (as I haven`t had much experience with Netshield).

I`m sure some of the other users may be able to help you with that question.

I do know that there is a problem with Netshield where the antivirus software can actually cause an abend on the server. I still haven`t been able to make time to do some serious testing, but I have had a few customers that have been able to work around the problem by excluding the following directories from Netshield:

DOMAIN\WPGATE\GWIA\RESULT
DOMAIN\WPGATE\GWIA\THIRD\RESULT
DOMAIN\WPGATE\GWIA\RECEIVE
DOMAIN\WPGATE\GWIA\THIRD\RECEIVE
DOMAIN\WPGATE\GWIA\SEND
DOMAIN\WPGATE\GWIA\THIRD\SEND

The only directory that needs to be scanned in order for the antivirus stuff to work is this one:
DOMAIN\WPGATE\GWIA\GEE_WORK
(make sure it scans recursively there)

HI Eric,
I`m using the combination you are considering Netshield and GEE Whiz and contrary to what a lot of people are reporting have not had any major problems. I started using Gee v1.0.1 and Netshield on a NW6/GW6 system in 12/02 and upgraded to GEE Whiz when it was first released. The only thing I did not like was that when a file was being scanned the CPU utilisation went to 95% for a while. I started adding the recomended folder Exclusions and only scan files as they are written to server and this has improved the CPU usage somewhat.
Yes it is true that Netshield doesn`t scan ZIP files, but McAfee explanes why in the file as it is to intensive a job for the system. They do have an option to scan Compressed Executable files is you chose to. You can add ZIP and other compressed files to the File-Type Filtering restrictions.

Just FYI,

Zip file scanning with GEE is on the list, and should be released in an upcoming version.
