We run Gee Whiz 1.4.9, Novell NetMail 3.10.G and McAfee’s AntiVirus scanning engine McScan32.nlm which is part of McAfee NetShield.

About two years ago we ran NetShield but had problems with our server abending and freezing up. We found that Novell NetMail’s documentation recommended running the scanning engine alone without running NetShield and that solved the problem. Then about a year ago we started using Gee Whiz. We didn’t delete the AntiSpam Agent or the AntiVirus Agent as Gee Whiz’s manual suggested and never had a problem. Then about two months ago files with zero bytes began to accumulate in the spool folder of our email system.

If we run McAfee without Gee Whiz or Gee Whiz without McAfee, files with zero bytes don’t accumulate.  We can’t delete the AntiVirus agent because we run it with McAfee’s scanning engine.  We tried unloading NetMail’s AntiSpam agent and although less files are accumulating, some are still accumulating and will probably become a problem over time.

Does Gee Whiz move the email to Sys:\Gee\NM\work folder?  If so, I never see anything in there.

Do you have any suggestions how to solve this problem or give us some insight into what could cause the files with zero bytes to accumulate in the spool folder on our email system?

First off,

I would recommend upgrading to version 2.0 (Or 2.0.1 when it comes out, which should be pretty quick).

However, the problem you're describing would definitely be a problem with Netmail. GEE Whiz doesn't touch anything in the spool directory, but rather, uses the NMAP protocol to process messages.

The NMAP agent actually does the creation of files in the spool directory.

You could also try upgrading to version 3.5.2 of Netmail, as there is some significant improvements there.

I'm wondering if the problem could be something to do with McAfee taking a long time to scan the messages and Gee Whiz trying to quarantine the messages. I see there is a setting called Time to idle between directory polls which is set to 5, in the Gee Whiz Admin Web Console. I was wondering if I set this to a higher number, if it would help this problem.

I'm still wondering what the sys:\gee\nm\work folder does. I never see anything in it. I'm trying to track down where the messages are going that show with zero bytes. They aren't listed in Gee Whiz's logs.

Should it make a difference that we didn't delete the AntiSpam agent, we only unloaded it?

No, the anti-spam agent doesn't really affect GEE Whiz.

I'm not quite sure why the documentation tells you to remove it.

As for the 0-byte problem in then spool directory, I would check with Novell as to why that may be happening.
