How to Move Users to a New OU or Server

EMU Features

EMU is primarily a bulk user import / create utility. See the "EMU Setup and User Guide" and the "EMU Quick Tour" for additional information on saving considerable administrative time and effort.

With an extensive feature set, administrators can use EMU to perform bulk user management including moving users to new locations in an existing eDirectory/NDS tree.

Overview - Use EMU to Move Users

EMU can be used to bulk move user accounts from one OU container to another OU container and the corresponding home directories from one server to another server.  EMU cannot be used to move GroupWise accounts.

The recommended procedures to move users within the same eDirectory/NDS tree are:
  1. Use EMU to move user accounts to a new OU container.
  2. Use EMU to copy home directories to a new server and link the directories to the moved users.
  3. Use Console One to move GroupWise accounts to a different PO on a different server (if required).

Move eDirectory User Accounts

To disable user accounts before moving them:
  1. Locate and highlight the user(s) in the "NDS Information" pane, and right-click.
  2. Choose "Modify Account(s)".
  3. Select the "NDS" tab and the "Acct Restrictions & Env" button.
  4. In the "Acct Restrictions & Env" detail page, check "Account Enable/Disable" and ensuer "Disabled" is selected.
  5. Click the "Modify" button.

To move user accounts using EMU:
  1. Locate and highlight the user(s) in the "NDS Information" pane, and right-click.
  2. Choose "Move Account(s) to New Container.
  3. In the "Move Account(s) to New Container" window, navigate and select the OU container to move the user(s) to and click "OK".
  4. In the "Are you sure?" window, verify the desitnation and choose "Yes" to continue, or "No" to cancel.
  5. If you selected "Yes", choose "OK" in the "Refresh" window.
  6. In the "NDS Information" pane, close the source OU container and expand the target OU container and confirm that the user(s) were moved correctly.

Move Home Directories to a New Server

EMU does not "move" home directories.  It copies the home directories to the new location (on the same volume, a different volume, in the same or different tree) and maintains the file system Trustee Assignments.  Before copying files, there is an  option to select to create a batch file that can be used to remove the original home directory folders.  This ensures that administrators can preserve original home directories and files until they are satisfied that the "move" was successful.

To move home directories to a new server (or a different location on the same server):
  1. Locate and highlight the user(s) in the "NDS Information" pane, and right-click.
  2. Choose "Modify Account(s)".
  3. Select the "Home Directory" tab and the "Copy Home Dir" button.
  4. (Optional) In the "Copy Dir" detail page, select "Generate a batch file to delete original home directories" and specify the name of the file.  After the home directories are copied to the new location, you can use this batch file to flag and delete the original home directories that were copied.
  5. In the "Copy Home Dir" detail page, check "Copy Home Directory".
  6. In the "Directory Location" window, navigate and select the target folder on the new (or same) server.
  7. Click the "Modify" button.
  8. Using Windows Explorer, verify that the folders were moved and that the file system rights were preserved.
  9. (Optional)  Use the batch file (created in step 4. above) to delete the original home directories.

To reenable user accounts after moving them:
  1. Locate and highlight the user(s) in the "NDS Information" pane, and right-click.
  2. Choose "Modify Account(s)".
  3. Select the "NDS" tab and the "Acct Restrictions & Env" button.
  4. In the "Acct Restrictions & Env" detail page, remove the check for "Account Enable/Disable".
  5. Click the "Modify" button.

Move GroupWise Accounts

EMU cannot move GroupWise accounts.  We recommend that you refer to the following Novell Documentation and TIDs on how to move GroupWise accounts:
