I need to disable Groupwise logins for a few hundred not-current users in our STUDENTS OU.  If I create an import file of the usernames I want to disable, can EMU go through and disable GW logins for just those accounts?

Thanks,
David Doster

Hello, David.

The current version of the GroupWise APIs do not allow the ability to disable GroupWise Accounts.  They only support the option to "Expire" GroupWise accounts.  The different between disabling and expiring a GroupWise account is that, with disabled accounts, users cannot login but the accounts will continue to receive mail.  With expired accounts the account will not receive any email.

Here are your options:

  • You can use EMU to expire GroupWise accounts.  With expired accounts, users cannot login and the accounts will not be able to receive mail.  (See "How to Expire GroupWise Accounts using EMU" below).

  • You can use EMU to change the password on the account(s).  Because the user will not know the new password, this will effectively disable the GroupWise account.  (See "How to force GroupWise Account Password Changes using EMU" below).

How to Expire GroupWise Accounts Based on a Text File Using EMU:
  1. Create a csv file that identifies the NDS account login names for the desired users.
  2. Run EMU and select "Tools" > "Account Search Based on Data File".
  3. In the "Account Search Based on Data File" window, for "Step 1" browse and select your file (from Step 1 above) and click "Open".  In Step 2, select the correct user name identifier field from the drop-down list.  In Step 3, choose the type of name present in the identifier field (common name or distinguished name).  Click "Next".
  4. In the "User Accounts Search" window select the tree name or containers in the tree to search for the user names, and click "OK".
  5. Verify that there are no "Duplicate Names" or "Names Not Found".  If there are, choose cancel and take appropriate corrective action.  If you only have "Names Found", click "Continue".
  6. In the "Report Information" pane, highlight all the accounts in the NDS Context list, right-click and choose "Select in NDS View".
  7. In the "NDS Information" pane, right-click all the highlighted accounts and choose "Modify Account(s)".
  8. In the "Modify Users" window, select the "GroupWise" tab and the "Modify GW Account" button.
  9. In the "Modify GW Account detail page, select "Set Mailbox Expiration Date" and set the date to yesterday.
  10. Click "Modify".

You cannot use EMU to remove the expiration date on accounts.  However, you can reset the expiration date to a date far into the future to re-enable the accounts.  Use the same procedure as above (Steps 1 to 10) but set the expirary date for a desired date in the future.

Viewing the EMU Quick Tour will allow you to better understand the EMU interface.

How to force GroupWise Account Password Changes using EMU:
  1. Use EMU to export account information for the users to be modified.  Highlight the desired users, choose Export Account Information.  Choose "Login Name, Distinguished Name, and Groupwise Account" as fields to export.  Save the file (e.g. "GWExpire.csv").  Modify this file to include a "GW Password" field, populate all records with the desired password and save the file.
  2. In EMU and select "Tools" > "Account Search Based on Data File".
  3. In the "Account Search Based on Data File" window, for "Step 1" browse and select your file (from step 1 above) and click "Open".  In Step 2, select the correct user name identifier field from the drop-down list (e.g. "Distinguished Name").  In step 3 choose the type of name present in the identifier field (distinguished name).
  6. In the "Report Information" pane highlight all the accounts in the NDS Context list, right-click and choose "Select in NDS View".
  7. In the "NDS Information" pane, right-click all the highlighted accounts and choose "Modify Account(s) from File", select the input file from step 1, and click "Open".
  8. In the "Modify Users From File", in the "Setup Information"  on the "Data File" detail page, set the "Select Account Identifier Field" to "Distinguished Name" and click "OK".
  9. Select the "Highlighted Accounts" button and confirm that you will be taking action on the correct user accounts (all accounts should have a green circle).
  10. Click the "Passwords"tab.  In the "Change Passwords" detail page, select "Change Passwords" and select "Change GroupWise Password" and specify the "GW Password" field.
  11. Click the "Modify" button.
