Is there a time frame for the new releases of Omni Mobile?  Especially support for Blackberry devices.

Thanks

Hello, David.

Omni Mobile for GroupWise Version 2.2.4.45 was released October 27.  We had expected to release Omni Mobile 2.5 for BlackBerry October 1, however, that release was held back by two bugs in the AppForge Crossfire application we use as the common development application for all mobile platforms.

Crossfire 6.5 was released September 15 and we have been assured by the developers that the two BlackBerry bugs will be fixed with their November 15 release of SP1.  We are in communication with AppForge on a weekly basis.  We expect to be able to finish the port of Omni Mobile for BlackBerry within two weeks of the bugs being fixed.  If you are interested in being part of the closed pre-release BlackBerry beta testing process, please send an email to support@omni-ts.com.

We expect that within two weeks of the BlackBerry version being available, Omni Mobile for Nokia Eseries phones (e61 and e62) will also be available.

I would like to take this opportunity to fill you in on the upcoming version 2.4 feature enhancements with Omni Mobile.  The following account search functions are being worked on for release in the mid-to-late-November time frame (for all supported platforms):

  • On-device content search: Search the local device for items based on standard GroupWise search parameters.
  • On-line full account search:  The user will be able to do an on-line full account search based on standard GroupWise search values.  The resulting email headers (in multiples of 20, controlled by the end-user) will be saved to the device and written to a Search Folder specific to the search query.  When you click on the email subject, the device will contact the server and extract the content of the email for immediate and off-line access.  To re-fresh the query, you select the update option on the Search Folder and the query will be udpated.

The following features will be part of our 3.x release path (February - March, 2007):
  • Calendar Busy Search.  You will be able to submit an on-line Calendar Busy Search when scheduling an appointment for multiple users.
  • On-line Proxy Search:  You will be able to select a proxy account and search that account using standard GroupWise search parameters.  The response will be handled the same way an on-line full account search is handled as described above.
  • Access GroupWise Query Folders from the device:  GroupWise Query Folders, used by many advanced GroupWise users, will be able to be accessed on-line from the Omni Mobile device.
  • GroupWise Document Management support:  Documents with a link stored in any of the synchronised folders will be made available and will be able to be retrieved as standard attachments.

Those are some of the larger feature enhancements that Omni Mobile 3.x will bring to users.  I look forward to hearing reaction from people regarding these features and others that they might require.

Hello, David.

Just a quick note to update this post.  Although this hasn't been publicly announced, starting November 20, Omni will be taking applications from people/companies who want to participate in the closed beta for Omni Mobile for Nokia Eseries devices (Nokia Series 60 3rd generation devices like the E61, E62, etc.).  The closed beta will start November 24.  If you happen to have one of these devices, use our Contact Us page to send us your contact information to join the closed beta.

Drum roll please!  Crossfire is down to one last bug that needs to be fixed for our BlackBerry port to be completed.  :-)  We will soon be taking applications for participants in our Omni Mobile for BlackBerry port with the closed beta.

For each of these betas, we are looking for approximately 20 people/companies who have the test resources, can take the time to participate in testing and can contribute feedback through a private forum, email and telephone conference call.

Existing Omni Mobile customers will be invited to participate in both closed betas.

Hello, Aldo

we are expecting the version 2.5 with supporting for BlackBerry devices. We bought Omni mobile in the end of the last year with the prospect for early installation of the new "BlackBerry" version.
Our managers would like to use BlackBerry devices and we don't know what to tell them. Unhappy Is it a real chance of releasing this version in May?

Regards, Milan

Hello, Milán.

I apologise for the delay in response to your inquiry.

AppForge and Crossfire were bought by Oracle in March.  We are in the process of discussing with Oracle what their plans are for continued support and development of ISV solutions built on Crossfire for BlackBerry and the other platforms.

Oracle acquired Crossfire so they could have a platform that vendors could use to build mobile applications that integrate into their CRM and ERP solutions.  We think that providing Oracle application support for Omni Mobile would be an excellent integration point and an opportunity to enhance Omni Mobile.

Now that Oracle has acquired Crossfire, we do not have any timelines for our BlackBerry and future releases.  We are hoping to hear good news from them, but we can't promise what the outcome will be.

Best regards,

Aldo
