Question:  What is the "Smart SSL Redirection" option that can be configured after the Omni Mobile server installation?

Answer:  By default, Omni Mobile can use Port 80 (clear text) or port 443 (SSL) to access GroupWise WebAccess. Not all mobile platforms can be configured to use locally generated SSL certificates. In these cases, you can enable "Smart SSL Redirection".

"Smart SSL Redirection" is a feature that allows Omni Mobile clients to communicate through WebAccess to the Omni Mobile server module over Port 80 but redirects all non-Omni Mobile requests to port 443 (SSL). This ensures that GroupWise WebAccess sessions from workstation browsers are encrypted. Omni Mobile encrypts the user authentication credentials at all times (on the device, and over the air) with or without "Smart SSL Redirection" selected.

The effect of this feature is:
  • WebAccess requests from a browser must use https:// or they will be redirected to use https://
  • Omni Mobile clients that support SSL will be able to use an https:// in the server URL in the Omni Mobile client options.
  • Omni Mobile clients that do not support SSL will be able to connect using port 80 sessions.
To enable "Smart SSL Redirection", the web server hosting GroupWise WebAccess must be enabled for both ports 80 and 443, otherwise WebAccess will fail when "Smart SSL Redirection" is enabled.
