Issue:  TZ Updater Tool - from Sun does not fix DST Calculation.

Omni is publishing this information as provided by Novell Premium Service.

Daylight Savings Time Java Alert Update:

A summary of the issue.  Sun found an issue with their TZUpdater tool that didn't fix the DST calculation when the old 3 letter TZ IDs are used (limited to EST, HST and MST).  Applications that make calls to these old 3 letter TZ IDs will result in the DST calculation being off by one hour.

1- Sun Java Impact

The solution is to run the TZUpdater tool with a -f -bc switch that enables support for the backwards compatible DST Timezones. Customers that have already run the tzupdater tool without the -f -bc switch will need to run it again to address the issues with the 3 letter TZ abbreviations.

Sun has released an official Sun Alert (ID#102836) at the URL:
http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-102 836-1 that describes the problem and resolution.

Note that several Novell products run on top of Windows Servers/Workstations and rely on Java for time information.  Java running on Windows will need to be updated as well.  More information from Sun regarding DST is available at the URL: http://www.sun.com/dst

2 - Sun Java running on NetWare

In addition to running the tzupdater tool, 3 files need to be deleted
from the NetWare server.  These three files are found in the
SYS:\java\lib\zi directory.  The 3 files are:  EST, MST and HST.

3-  IBM Java Update

SLES shipped with a version of IBM Java as well as the Sun Java.  IBM
has a similar tool available to patch their environment as Sun's tzupdater.

IBM has a document that describes the problem and solution at the URL:

http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=3068&uid=swg 21250247

Note that different tools are needed for Z Series and all other OSs.

  - All platform except z/OS: jtzu-1.4.7c-est-mst.zip
  - z/OS: jtzu-zos-1.4.7c-est-mst.zip

The download information is available towards the bottom of the
document.

The Novell TIDs referenced at http://www.novell.com/info/daylight_saving.html are being updated to reflect the information confirmed today and will be available shortly.

Novell Recommendations:
  1. Customers running Sun's Java are recommended to run the Sun tzupdater tool with the -f -bc switches to eliminate potential problems that could exist for programs that reference the old TZ IDs.
  2. Customers running IBM's Java are recommended to run the appropriate IBM script file for the OS they are using (See above)
  3. Customers running Sun's Java on NetWare will need to run the tzupdater tool with the -f -bc switch and manually delete the three files EST, MST and HST from the SYS:\java\lib\zi directory
Note that NTS engineers have installed and "tested" the updates from
Sun and IBM and haven't found any issues.  However, Novell has not done exhaustive regression testing on these updated solutions from Sun and IBM and Novell's product portfolio.

If you have any questions please call Novell Technical Support at
