As part of the setup you have to enter the Salesforce security token if you are using an external machine.

This token is 25 random characters [a-z][A-Z][0-9] and must be added to the end of the password. At the moment the password field does not support cut/paste which means the key must be entered by hand - not the simplest of tasks.
