Omni Syncaphone FAQ

Q: What cell phones are supported?
A: Omni Syncaphone supports Java phones that have at least 200 KB of memory dedicated to Java. For a complete list of supported devices see the Omni Syncaphone Devices page or refer to the Omni Syncaphone Administrator Guide.
Q: What server platforms can Syncaphone be installed on?
A: Syncaphone server will install on NetWare 6.0, 6.5 and Novell OES, and Linux Server. All servers must meet java requirements and must have the GroupWise 6.5 or 7 WebAccess Application server installed. Refer to the "Syncaphone Admin Guide" for additional server installation requirements.
Q: Why is GroupWise WebAccess required?
A: GroupWise WebAccess provides the "conduit" through which Omni Syncaphone connects to GroupWise. The Syncaphone client application has a desktop GroupWise client look and feel and should be fairly intuitive to use. A User Guide is available to assist with user training.
Q: Does Omni Syncaphone support languages other than English?
A: The first version is shipping with English language support for the server. Client application packages are available in English, Danish, German, French, Dutch, and Norwegian languages. Future versions of the Omni Syncaphone client will include support for other languages.
Q: What carriers provide connectivity for devices that use Omni Syncaphone?
A: Omni Syncaphone supports over-the-air devices on any service provider network that services your cell phone, typically GPRS. If you can browse the internet using a browser from your cell phone, you can use Omni Syncaphone. We recommend that you subscribe to a cost effective data plan.
Q: What happens if I lose my Omni Syncaphone enabled cell phone? Can Omni Syncaphone remotely "clear" the data on my PDA?
A: Yes, the Omni Syncaphone administrator can issue a "kill pill" to remotely clear (delete) the GroupWise content and GroupWise account information from the Syncaphone client application installed on the java phone. It is important to differentiate between the Omni Syncaphone GroupWise client information and any personal account information that may have been configured in the native email, calendar and contact clients. Native email, contact and calendar information will not be cleared by the Syncaphone "kill pill".
Q: Are there any monthly fees or service charges?
A: There are no monthly fees or service charges for Omni Syncaphone. Additional data transfer costs will be encurred, so necessary measures need to be taken with the GroupWise account (e.g. use of rules and Junk Mail handling) to ensure that only desired data is copied to the java phone from the GroupWise account.
Q: Can the Syncaphone product automatically set alarms for calendar items?
A: Syncaphone was developed primarily for "unsmart" Java-based phones for which calendar alarms are not supported. Calendar alarm support is only available for the more recent "smart" Java-based phones. An example of a phone that supports calendar alarms is the Nokia 9300 or 9500 phone. One of the functions that is available with Syncaphone on the Nokia 9300 or 9500 series is the ability to save GroupWise calendar and contact information to the native applications. This option allows you to use the native calendar alarms and other native actions. When you download the GroupWise calendar event for which you want to have an alarm, you choose to save it to the native calendar.
