System RequirementsHost Computer RequirementsFor a 6-user Desktop Multiplier system, we recommend the following:
View Linux Documentation » Technical NotesQ. How do I connect the USB keyboards and mice? You need to connect your USB keyboards and mice to a powered USB hub (either external or a PCI card). Non-powered hubs may not provide sufficient power for all connected devices. If you need to use extension cables, ensure that the distance between the keyboard or other USB device and computer / powered hub is not greater than 5 m (15 ft). Q. How do I assign a keyboard and mouse to a monitor? A. After connecting your monitors and USB keyboards and mice to the host computer and installing the Desktop Multiplier and rebooting, you will be prompted with a wizard screen on each monitor (view Screenshots) that asks you to press a Function key and click a mouse. To break the link or re-assign a keyboard/mouse combination, simply unplug and reconnect the devices to the USB hub while the system is running. The assignment screen will automatically appear on top of your current desktop. No work will be lost. Press the correct Function key and click the mouse to return to your desktop. Q. What graphics cards do you recommend to connect the monitors? A. The Desktop Multiplier for SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED 10) is designed to support all single- and dual-head video cards supported by xorg-x11 / Xfree86. Any video card combinations where you can start X in multi-head (i.e., multi-monitor, multi-display) should work with this software. While not a comprehensive list, we recommend the following low-cost dual-head graphics cards, which are available in both AGP, PCI and PCIe chipsets from a variety of manufacturers: ATI
Typically, a 10 station system would be built using 5 dual-head video cards. While it is possible to support a heterogeneous mix of video chipsets within a single computer box (e.g., mixing Radeon, NVIDIA, and Matrox cards), it is not recommended as it is not possible for us to directly test and support all possible combinations. Using the on-board video card (video hardware built into the motherboard) is not recommended. Q. How far can users be from the host Desktop Multiplier computer? A. The Desktop Multiplier for SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop is ideal for groups of computers in close physical proximity. While greater distances can be reached using USB repeaters or other hardware options, a group of desktop stations within a 15-foot radius of the Desktop Multiplier system is suggested for best overall performance using standard hardware. Q. How do I install the Desktop Multiplier for SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop? A. To install the Desktop Multiplier for SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, unzip the demo software on the host computer (e.g., unzip 1-Box.zip). Run the INSTALL script as the "root" user (e.g., sh [/path/]INSTALL). The INSTALL script will not overwrite your existing xorg-x11 / Xfree86 configuration files. Uninstalling the Desktop Multiplier software from your system should fully restore the original SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop system configuration. Uninstalling the Desktop Multiplier from your system should fully restore the original system configuration. To perform an uninstall, run the UNINSTALL script as the “root” user, (e.g. sh [/full path/] UNINSTALL) Note: We recommend disabling on-board video and USB 2.0 (sometimes referred to as “Enhanced USB”) in the BIOS if your motherboard includes an on-board video chipset. USB 2.0 devices will run at USB 1.1 speeds. If the on-board video is not disabled, boot messages will be displayed on that video output. If no monitor is connected to the on-board video output, these boot messages will not be visible. The on-board video may be able to support a workstation depending on the model and revision of your motherboard. Click here for a complete list of Frequently Asked Questions.
