Omni Mobile 2.0 Release  (2006.05.04)

Release Date:  May 4, 2006

Client Build:  2.0.0.1 (2006.05.04)
Server Build:   omnimobile-server-installer.jar (2006.05.02)
Desktop PDB Creator Build:

  • omnimobile-desktop.win32.2006.05.02.125 (Windows)
  • omnimobile-desktop.linux.2006.05.02.125 (Linux)
  • omnimobile-desktop.macosx.2006.05.02.125 (Mac)

This is a new release with completely new server, client and account create components. To enable the new client features, users will need to install the new client, create a new set of PDB files and install them on their device. Version 2.0 allows this to be done over-the-air.

Users will need to install the new PDB Creator on their workstation (if using the desktop version) to create their PDBs. This server version is compatible with older clients as long as the database update script is successful. The database update script runs automatically the first time you restart GroupWise WebAccess after installing Omni Mobile 2.0.

If you are going to use the older Omni Mobile client with Version 2.0, users will have to login to their WebAccess Omni Mobile profile and select "Update" before using the old client. This will update their user preferences to be compatible with version 2.0.

OMNI MOBILE 2.0 NEW CLIENT FEATURES

All Platforms except as noted:
  1. Attachment downloads.  After downloading the attachment, Version 2.0 allows the user to open the file with a native application. Please note that the different mobile platforms might not support all versions of attachments. This release provides full attachment support including the choice to use the Omni Mobile internal or the device external download manager for Sony Ericsson, PocketPC and Windows Mobile devices. The advantage of using the external download manager (browser download) is that it will be faster for large files. The disadvantage is that the user will need to rename the file and add the correct extension. When using the external WebAccess download process, the downloaded file be saved as a single digit file name without an extension. Palm OS devices will not have the option to use the Omni Mobile internal download manager. Palm OS users will only have the option to use the external (browser-based) download process. For all mobile platforms, when a user chooses to use the external download manager, the download URL will be copied to the clipboard. The user will be prompted to copy this URL into a browser and download the attachment to the default browser download location (rather than to the Omni Mobile/Downloads directory) where it can be opened by the native application. This functionality is dependant on a pending release of an AppForge Crossfire API with enhanced Palm OS support. We expect to be able to offer the Omni Mobile internal download manager option for Palms with a future release of Omni Mobile. A future release of Omni Mobile will also allow you to set a checkbox option that will allow the attachment to be opened automatically upon completion of the download whether you are using the internal or external download manager.

  2. Viewing attachments as HTML using the GroupWise WebAccess Viewer.  Version 2.0 leverages GroupWise WebAccess' built-in HTML converters and allows the user to view the HTML rendered version of attachments. Using the "Convert to HTML" option does not save the attachment on the device for off-line viewing. The major advantages of using this option include: there is no need to download the attachment and open it in a native device application; the device might not have an application that can open the particular attachment type; it is much faster to view the HTML rendered attachment; and it consumes less battery to view the document in HTML format than it does to download, save and open the attachment in a device native application.

Note on steps to use the "Convert to HTML" option:

    • Select the attachment icon to start the download process.
    • Select Yes prompted: "Would you like to convert the attachment into an HTML view?"
    • This will bring up the prompt: "A URL has been copied to your clipboard. Please paste this URL into a browser to view the attachment."
    • Open a browser. Select the appropriate option to paste the URL into the browser (eg. Tools -> Paste -> Enter) and the WebAccess view of the attachment is presented.

  3. Pure HTML emails are now supported as attachments.  To view pure HTML emails, download the HTML attachment to the downloads directory and open it with the native browser or view it with the HTML viewer. A future release will automatically launch the browser when you select an attachment that is an HTML file.

  4. Poison Pill implementation.   We have implemented two options for the poison pill. Option one is to send the poison pill to clear the data and allow the device to reconnect to the server and set up a new account (or the same account for that matter). This option is called "Poison Pill then Enable". The second option is "Poison Pill then Disable". This will delete the Omni Mobile data and not allow the device to reconnect to the system. The poison pill option is available on the General Tab of the WebAccess interface.

  5. Browser-based Omni Mobile client installation.   In addition to posting the client files on an FTP site at a URL that you provide your users, Omni Mobile 2.0 allows you to set up the client installation files on your WebAccess server so the end-user can download the client directly to the device using a browser. This means a workstation is no longer required to install the application or to initialize the user account (create the PDB files). NB: Due to size restrictions imposed by WAP Gateways used by Sony Ericsson devices, downloading the installer from a browser is not supported on the Sony Ericsson platform. If you would like to do an over-the-air installation for Sony Ericsson, please use IR, SMS, or Bluetooth to retrieve the installation file. For Sony Ericsson users can also retrieve the as an email attachment they can download and install.

  6. Over-the-air and cradle-based "On Device" account provisioning.   The First-Time Run Wizard removes the version 1.0 requirement to have a workstation to provision the account's initial information (the PDB files). Keep in mind that workstation and cradle-based "On Device" account provisioning will always be MUCH faster than over-the-air "On Device" provisioning. We recommend cradle-based or workstation-based account provisioning for accounts that want to populate lots of email history or large address books (200 entries or more).

  7. Over-the-Air Address book updates.   Different address books can now be scheduled to be updated over-the-air at different times and intervals. Address books are synchronised from the GroupWise account to the device. Bi-directional synchronisation will be available in a future release.

  8. Intelligent Battery Monitor.  When Omni Mobile detects there is under 10% battery available, it turns off the scheduled updates and sets the device to Offline Mode. Users can still use the Manual Update option on a per folder basis to update their mailbox. The percentage of battery remaining for each device has been added to the Omni Mobile General Tab Option in WebAccess.

  9. Email address auto-completion.  Omni Mobile will automatically search the preferred address book for email address auto-completion in the To:, CC: and BC: fields when composing an item.

  10. Select Preferred Address Book and Sort Order.   You can now select a preferred address book and configure the field on which each address book will sort and do lookups for contacts. The sort order value can be set on a per-address book basis.

  11. Open to Preferred View.   You can now configure Omni Mobile to open by default to the top level tree view, to a specific folder, or to the address book as the preferred view in your Omni Mobile profile.

  12. Multiple devices can now be used with the same account.  A future release will allow multiple accounts to be available on the same device. (This option is currently supported if using an external storage card for each user.)

  13. A number of changes have been made to the Omni Mobile WebAccess interface to support the new and modified options.

  14. A number of client menu changes have been implemented to allow for better five-way and enhanced button navigation for Windows devices and future support for toggle and jog-wheel navigation with the Nokia Series 60 and BlackBerry platforms.

  15. Localisation of the Calendar.   The calendar views will now respect the device local language settings for the names of the days and months and for the start of the week.

  16. Added "Accept/Decline Recurring" Appointments, Tasks and Notes.  When accepting a recurring event, you can now choose to Accept All and Decline All.

  17. Added Shared Folder icons.   Emails can now be forwarded from shared folders. Please note that forwarding an item from a shared folder will only forward the email content. Attachments or email attachments that are associated with the email will not be forwarded. This is due to GroupWise WebAccess not supporting the forward with attachments option.

  18. Added "Accept shared address books".

  19. Added appointment start times and provided improved subject view to the calendar day view.

  20. Changes to posted appointments are now updated to the client.

  21. Improved error handling of interrupted connections.

  22. Omni Mobile is now compatible with GroupWise 7 Service Pack 1.
