Three Linux PCs Power 20-Station Novell SLED 10 Internet Café at BETT
Blueloop, Novell, HP and Omni demonstrate how up to 10 users can share a single Linux desktop computer at British Education Technology show. The Linux Desktop Multiplier is ideal for Linux-based computer labs, classrooms, Internet cafés, call centres and retail stores.
SOMERSET, United Kingdom—20 December 2006—Blueloop, Novell and HP are partnering to deliver a 20-station Internet café running off three standard HP desktop computers at BETT, the world's leading educational information & communications technologies (ICT) event, attracting 600 educational suppliers and over 28,000 visitors. BETT, held at Olympia in London from January 10-13, 2007, brings together the global teaching and learning community for four days of innovations and inspirations.
Each HP desktop computer will be running Novell's new SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 operating system and a software add-on called the Linux Desktop Multiplier, powered by Userful. The Linux Desktop Multiplier enables up to 10 independent stations – consisting of only a monitor, keyboard and mouse – to work at the same time on a single desktop computer.
"Visitors to BETT, LinuxWorld at Olympia, Brainstormer at Telford and the Groupware User Group Seminar at the Manchester Science Museum have had an opportunity to experience GroupWise 7, GroupWise Messenger 7, Evolution and OpenOffice 2.0 running on a 'Multiplied' SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10," says Aldo Zanoni, CEO of Omni. "The Linux Desktop Multiplier delivers significant hardware, software and management savings for organisations that are considering Linux for public-access computers, computer labs, Internet kiosks and call centres."
“Using the Linux Desktop Multiplier, Omni and Blueloop were able to provide the Internet café service at the recent BrainStormer event in Telford. The service was extremely well received by the delegates and functioned flawlessly throughout the week. A great service provided by a very professional group of people,” reports Dr Peter Atkins, Managing Director of Mindworks Inc Ltd, Brainstormer’s events co-ordinators.
"System performance was absolutely stellar," reports Robin Barker, Marketing Director for Blueloop. "All 12 stations were occupied regularly during the two-day conference, and we even had a few line-ups to access the machines.
The physical connection of the monitors and USB devices is made possible by additional dual-head video cards and powered USB hubs. The multi-station system outperforms thin clients at a fraction of the cost.
