WHEN:
LinuxWorld London, Olympia 2, London, UK
October 25th, 10:20 - 10:55 a.m.
Theatre 2 (Reserve a seat)

DESCRIPTION:
In this session, you will learn the fastest, easiest and least expensive way to deploy large numbers of full-featured SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktops (or other Linux desktops).

The Linux Desktop Multiplier allows up to 10 full-client independent user sessions to run on a single Linux desktop computer. When compared to single-user Microsoft desktops, the Desktop Multiplier's "10-to-1" advantage can deliver immediate cost savings of up to 80% on hardware, software, maintenance and electricity.

Ideal for high-density desktop environments (computer labs, thin client deployments, call centres and retail stores).

How the Linux Desktop Multiplier Works

The Linux Desktop Multiplier allows up to 10 users to work at the same time on a single Linux desktop computer. The Linux Desktop Multiplier will run on new Intel Pentium 4 and AMD PCs or older repurposed desktop computers. Omni recommends that each machine have a minimum of 256 MB of RAM per user.

As seen in the photos above, users have their own desktop – consisting of a monitor, USAB keyboard and mouse – all connected to a SINGLE computer. Two monitors are connected to each dual-head video card (ATI, nVIDIA or Matrox cards) that is added to the system. USB keyboards and mice get connected to a powered hub if additional USB ports are required.

Students log in normally and have access to the SLED 10 or Linux software bundle (GroupWise, Messenger, OpenOffice, PDF creator, photo editor, drawing program). Cost savings are in the order of 60-80%, depending on the number of users connected to each PC. "Multiplied" Linux desktop systems outperform thin clients at a fraction of the cost.
