SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 'Multiplied'
Novell's new SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 operating system presents a compelling alternative to Windows XP and Windows Vista for corporate, education, government and healthcare environments. With the Desktop Multiplier software add-on, organisations can get a "10-to-1 advantage" on hardware, software, infrastructure and management costs of migrating to Linux.
How the Linux Desktop Multiplier Works
The Desktop Multiplier allows up to 10 users to work at the same time on a single Linux computer. As seen in the photos below, each student has his or her own desktop, consisting of a monitor, keyboard and mouse (all connected to a SINGLE computer).
Students log in normally and can create documents in OpenOffice 2.0 (compatible with Microsoft Office XP), connect to the Internet, access email and use educational software. Performance is excellent!
Benefits of Linux Desktop Multiplier in Education
- Fastest, easiest and least expensive way to deploy large numbers of full-featured SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop workstations for students, faculty, staff and the public
- Dramatically increases Linux TCO savings by eliminating up to 9 out of 10 physical PCs
- Outperforms thin clients and Blade servers at a fraction of the cost
- Reduces electrical consumption, computer waste, electrical infrastructure requirements
- Decreases ongoing maintenance and management costs
- Leverages computer processor across multiple users
