Web Management and eControl FAQ
Q: What is the difference between Help Desk Utility and eControl HD?
A: eControl HD takes advantage of the eControl "proxy" service that allows Help Desk Operators or Junior Administrators to manage tasks through a web browser. eControl delivers controlled "ZERO Rights" help desk user management. This means eControl operators require NO SUPERVISOR or MANAGEMENT RIGHTS to eDirectory, GroupWise or the file system. All tasks that are carried out in eControl are written to a log and audit file for reporting and security auditing purposes.
HDU runs as a Windows application. It requires the GroupWise and Novell Client32 applications to be installed on the workstation. It requires standard eDirectory and GroupWise rights to be assigned to HDU users. HDU uses the Novell and GroupWise client APIs. There is no logging or auditing of tasks that are managed with HDU.
Q: How does eControl assign rights?
A: eControl does not assign rights to users. The eControl server logs in as a service that has Supervisor rights to Novell eDirectory, GroupWise and the file system. It carries out the user management tasks (change GroupWise password) on behalf of the user.
Q: Do I have to create new user accounts and assign them to the eControl system?
A: No. eControl Help Desk Operators or junior administrators login to the web server using their standard eDirectory login and password. eControl tasks are assigned to eDirectory groups. Any user in an eDirectory group that has been assigned a user management task has the authourisation to carry out that task.
Q: What is an eControl task?
A: eControl tasks are the most granular function that can be carried out by an eControl user. Exampes include:
Q: How does eControl "Create Users" work?
A: The eControl Account Create or Manage module allows the adminstrator to create multipler "Create User" profiles. These profiles are associated to different eDirectory templates and contain all of the information that is required to create an account: login name, first name, last name, GroupWise Post Office, GroupWise visibility, Group Membership, account expiry date, etc.
The eControl operator selects a profile, fills in the required account information (configured by the administrator) and the account gets created based on the eControl profile. Think of an eControl profile as a user create "wizard". The wizard checks to make sure the account is unique in eDirectory and GroupWise before it allows the account to be created.
Q: Can eControl be installed on a NetWare or Linux server?
A: The eControl "proxy service" must be installed on a Windows Workstation or Server because is uses the Win32 GroupWise APIs to manage the GroupWise account information. eControl is compatible with eDirectory and GroupWise running on Novell NetWare, OES, SUSE Linux and Microsoft Windows. eControl will be ported over to Novell OES and SUSE Linux when OES GroupWise API support becomes available.
Q: Can I tell which eControl operator made what changes?
A: eControl allows the administrator to control the actions are logged into the Audit Trail. This includes everything from who changed whose password to who viewed which GroupWise Distribution Lists a particular user belongs to. The Audit Trail can be exported to a spreadsheet format for extensive reporting purposes.
Q: I have a single GroupWise system that spans three different eDirectory trees. How can eControl help?
A: eControl allows you to manage multiple eDirectory trees and multiple GroupWise systems from a single browser interface.
Q: We use Novell eDirectory with Microsoft Exchange. What can eControl do for me?
A: eControl version 2.0 is compatible with Novell eDirectory, GroupWise, Netmail and Microsoft Active Directory and Exchange. Your HDOs are able to manage multiple different systems from a single browser without any "rights" to eDirectory or GroupWise or "permissions" to Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange.
Q: How does the "Forgot My GroupWise Password" option work?
A: The eControl Self-Service module allows users to change their GroupWise and/or eDirectory password from a browser by answering the challenge/response questions that are configured for the user. Before this options becomes available, the user configures the answers to the required questions in the user Self-Service module.
Q: What other options are there in the User Self-Service module?
A: One of the features that administrators appreciate is being able to allows users to subscribe to or unsubscribe from GroupWise Distribution Lists that have been made available for that user. By allowing users to self-subscribe to GorupWise Distribution Lists, you are able to user GroupWise as a List Server.
Q: What customisation services are available for eControl?
A: We have customised eControl to meet a number of different customer requirements. These include automating user creation based on Banner Student Registration Systems, allowing students to create and/or activate their accounts from a web browser, and others. If eControl doesn't quite do what you want it to do, contact us with your requirements and we will see what we can do to help out.
