Test Drive Scenario
User Self Administrator (SA)

After reading the scenarios that are described below, we invite you to login to our live demo eControl network and carry out wizard-based self-administration tasks.

Click here to login as a Help Desk Operator.

Self Administer (SA) allows users to administer the account values (phone numbers, address, etc.) that gave been assigned to their groups.  Different eDirectory or Active Directory groups can be assigned different SA tasks.  These tasks determine which (if any) account values can be viewed or changed by the user and which other Self Administer functions can be accessed by the user (including the ability to subscribe or unsubscribe from GroupWise and Exchange Distribution Lists).

After you have finished your eControl test drive, fill out an on-line request to have a technician contact you to set up a 30-day trial version of eControl.  Before contacting us, please review the eControl hardware and software requirements.

Test Drive Scenarios

eControl SA Scenario One - what can I change?

  1. Connect to eControl LIVE.
  2. Login as one of the berlin4 (password = econtrol).
  3. Select the Self Administer button.

What eDirectory information can you see? What values can you change? These settings are managed by the eControl Administration interface. In a more complex environment, you could have different users be configured to see and change different information about themselves based on the "Self Administration" task assignments you create in the eControl Administration interface.

eControl SA Scenario Two - change your password

For this scenario, you will need to open two browsers. Please make sure that you open two separate browsers by double-clicking on Internet Explorer twice rather than selecting CTRL N. If you select CTRL N, the two browsers will share the same session ID and login.

  1. In your first browser, connect to eControl LIVE.
  2. Login as berlin4 (password = econtrol) (Remember that after you change this password, econtrol will no longer be the password!)
  3. You can change passwords for users in your container. Do a search for aa*.
  4. Select and right-click one of the accounts and change that person's password.
  5. In the second browser, connect to eControl LIVE and login as the user whose password you have just changed.
  6. You will see that when you log in as this user, you should have a Self Administer button - you won't have the Help Desk button.
  7. Click the Self Administer button.
  8. Determine which values you can self-administer.

One of the potential problems you might experience in this scenario is if different HDOs change the user password on the same account you are changing while you are completing this scenario! What are the chances of that happening? We're not sure, but remember that these are live and dynamic sessions. If there are 20 people testing eControl at the same time, you might be changing values on the same accounts!
