Test Drive Scenario - eControl Self-service

After reviewing the scenarios described below, we invite you to login to our live demo eControl system and carry out user self-service tasks.

Click here to login as a user with Self-service Access.

eControl Self-service allows you to define what information users can administer on their own accounts (phone numbers, home address, licence plate number, etc.).  Different eDirectory or Active Directory groups can be assigned different Self-service tasks.  These tasks determine which (if any) account values can be viewed or changed by the user and which other Self-service functions can be accessed by the user (including the ability to answer password self-service questions and subscribe or unsubscribe to/from Exchange mail groups and GroupWise distribution lists).

After you have finished your eControl Self-service test drive, fill out a download request to receive an email that contains download information.  Before installing, please review the eControl hardware and software requirements.

Test Drive Scenarios

eControl Self-service Module - What can I change?

  1. Connect to eControl LIVE.
  2. Login as one of the manager or hdo accounts used during with the eControl Manage scenarios.  For example, berlinmanager or berlinhdo (password = econtrol).  To review which accounts are associated to Windows Server 2003 or 2008 with Exchange 2003 and 2007 or eDirectory and GroupWise, refer to the eControl Test Drive Summary Page.
  3. Select the Self-administer tab.

What information can you view? What values can you change? Being able to view and change settings is managed by the eControl Administration interface. Based on different user self-service requirements, multiple profiles can be created to allow the utmost flexibility.

eControl SA Scenario Two - Use Self-service to use password self-service.

For this scenario, you will need to open two separate browsers. Use two different browsers or make sure you open two separate browsers by double-clicking on on the browser rather than selecting CTRL N or opening a new tab.  You will login to eControl in the first browser as an account with password change authority.  You will login to eControl in the second browser as an end-user.  If you do not open a second tab, the two browsers will share the same session ID and login.

  1. In your first browser, connect to eControl LIVE.
  2. Login as berlinmanager (password = econtrol). (Do not change this account's password.)
  3. The berlinmanager user has authority to change passwords for users in the Berlin OU.  Do a search for accounts that start with a*.
  4. Select and right-click one of the accounts and change that person's password.
  5. In the second browser, connect to eControl LIVE and login as the user whose password you just changed.
  6. You will see that when you login as this user, you will have a Self-service tab.  The Manage or Create tabs will not be available to be selected.
  7. Click the Self-service tab.
  8. Determine which values you can change.  Go ahead and make a few changes.
  9. If you want to test the password self-service functionality, you will need to answer and save the password self-service questions and logout.
  10. On the login page, select the Forgot My Password link and follow the steps to change your own password based on the answers you provided in #9.

One of the potential problems you might experience in this scenario is if different people are changing passwords on the same account while you are completing this scenario! What are the chances of that happening? We're not sure, but remember that these are live and dynamic sessions. If there are 20 people testing eControl at the same time, you might be changing values on the same accounts!
